Not that you can tell, but I actually train dogs part-time. I have trained dogs most of my life. Have always had GSDs, volunteered with a GSD rescue, and am one of their special handlers. I know I am really good with dogs. But I have never had one close to him before. I have always had show-line GSDs. My new dog reminds me of a dog that is one generation removed from a wolf. He has had challenges with resource guarding, barrier aggression, over-arousal aggression, and defense of his personal space. I am seeing substantial progress doing it your way and really appreciate your help. I can now take the ball out of his mouth when we are playing. Before, I am pretty certain he would have bitten me. When he is heeling, I can stop and pet him before he would growl. I can stand over him with him between my legs, and I can push him into a down before he would growl. Now he allows it. Small things but progress. I think what I was really missing was the concept of him working for me vs. him working in prey and working for himself. Pack drive vs. prey drive.
