his method.

What does obedience mean beyond knowing commands? Hear Hans explain his approach, the role of distractions, and your part in the training.

Key ideas in this video

Hans explains why he sees obedience as more than teaching commands. In his out-of-drive approach:

  • The owner builds a working relationship with the dog through training.
  • He aims for responses around distractions without depending on a visible treat or toy.
  • He emphasizes the handler’s own practice, communication, and consistency.

This is a summary of Hans’s explanation. Watch the video for his examples and the full context.

For the moments beyond practice

Knowing a command is only the beginning.

It can be frustrating when your dog listens during training, then ignores you when something more interesting comes along.

Hans’s “out-of-drive” approach focuses on clear direction and your relationship with your dog, without depending on a visible treat or toy for a response.

The membership gives you a way to study that approach, practice it, and ask for help as you learn.

Walking past another dog.

After seeking guidance for her dog’s growling and fixation, Dara shared an update about practicing around a friend’s Labrador.

“… we were able to walk by the lab multiple times with no issues.”

Her post describes using Hans’s separately purchased videos, guidance from Hans and another group member, and one correction during the exercise.
